Ganger (GR1017)

Purpose of job

The Ganger is responsible for supervising a team (“gang”) of operatives to ensure safe, efficient, and high‑quality delivery of construction and civil engineering works. The role provides hands‑on leadership, ensuring that work is carried out in accordance with project specifications, programmes, health and safety legislation, and Griffiths’ standards. The Ganger plays a key role in coordinating daily activities, supporting workforce productivity, maintaining site safety, and ensuring workmanship meets the required quality to avoid rework.

Principal Accountability

A Ganger is accountable for, but not limited to, the following within each project(s):

  • Supervising and coordinating a team of operatives to ensure safe and timely delivery of site activities.
  • Ensuring all work follows health and safety procedures, RAMS, and legislative requirements.
  • Communicating daily plans, instructions, and expectations to the gang.
  • Monitoring progress against programme and reporting issues, delays, or risks to the Supervisor.
  • Liaising professionally with clients, stakeholders, and the public when required.

Detailed Responsibilities

A Ganger is responsible for, but not limited to, the following for project (s):

  • Leadership and Supervision: Allocating tasks to operatives and ensuring that they understand the work requirements. Leading by example using safe working practices and quality delivery whilst providing guidance, on-the-job training, and support to other team members. Conducting daily briefings, including toolbox talks and safe start discussions.
  • Health, Safety and Compliance: Ensure that the gang works in full compliance with site safety rules, RAMS, and environmental requirements and carrying out pre-task checks to ensure that operatives have the correct competency, equipment, and PPE. Identifying and reporting dangerous situations/hazards, unsafe behaviours, and near misses. Maintaining a tidy, organised, and safe work area, including safe storage of materials and tools. Supporting accident and incident reporting when required.
  • Operational Duties: Coordinate and participate in site activities including earthworks, groundwork, drainage, pipe laying, concreting, kerbing, paving, ducting, and other civil engineering tasks. Ensuring that all works are completed to a high standard, in line with drawings and specifications. Communicate material, equipment, and resource requirements to the Supervisor.
  • Planning and Coordination: Assisting the Supervisor with short-term planning of daily and weekly works. Check the availability of materials, equipment, and plant before works commence and coordinate deliveries to ensure smooth workflow and minimise downtime. Report the progress, emerging risks, delays, or constraints affecting the programme.

Required experience, knowledge, qualifications, and training

  • Proven experience as a Ganger, Lead Operative, or similar supervisory role in Construction/Civil Engineering
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to give clear instructions
  • Excellent understanding of construction health and safety regulations
  • Ability to read and interpret site drawings, instructions, and specifications
  • Holds a valid CSCS card/NPORS card with a CSCS logo (required)

Desirable experience, qualifications, and training

  • CPCS/NPORS tickets
  • First Aider qualification
  • SSSTS or equivalent supervisor-level safety training
  • Full UK Driving Licence
  • Any additional construction-related training or certification that is relevant to civil engineering activities
  • Supervisory experience of a gang within a construction environment
