Drilling Supervisor (GeoTech) (GR1041)

Purpose of job

Responsible for supporting the safe delivery of drilling operations for all Geotechnical projects and others across the Griffiths portfolio. Responsible for working in accordance with company policies, procedures and work instructions. Responsible for ensuring that approved drilling related documentation is communicated and understood by AGC and sub-contracted/agency geotechnical operatives working on the projects, and other site staff who need to co-ordinate with the geotechnical team.

Principal Accountability

The Drilling Supervisor is accountable for, but not limited to, the following:
• Provide Health and Safety leadership to their Drilling and Project Team and promote behavioural safety improvements
• Ensure that the Geotechnical team rigorously adhere to Company Rules and project specific reporting requirements
• Uphold the core company values, inspire and encourage the same throughout the site team

Detailed Responsibilities

The Drilling Supervisor is responsible for, but not limited to, the following:
• Planning, managing and overseeing drilling operations as part of wide-ranging project portfolio, incl. soil nailing, rock bolting, anchoring, small diameter piling and other elements as projects dictate.
• Responsible for assisting the Construction Manager in the safe and technical management of the Geotechnical Team, incl. inspection, testing and maintenance of all drilling equipment, timely logging and reporting of issues, arranging repairs and servicing of drilling equipment, and compliance with BDA best practice guidance.
• Responsible for assessing sites during tender and pre-construction phases to determine safe drilling methodologies to construct the proposed works.
• Fulfil Site Supervisor role for small scale/short duration Geotechnical projects within capability.
• Provide support to the Project Management team with the safe operational delivery of the project
• Ensure that you have been trained and assessed as competent to undertake that tasks you are assigned, and understand the controls identified to safely manage the risks associated with construction activities
• Management of resources within their area of responsibility, such as arranging competent agency labour to assist with workload under instruction from the Construction Manager
• Compliance with all project documentation, applicable legislation and standards
• Maintaining effective client / stakeholder relationships to protect and enhance the company’s reputation to help enable repeat business
• Providing support to ensure that project environmental risks, objectives and targets are met
• Promote the importance of the Quality Management process, adherence to Inspection Test & Plans and ensuring completion of quality checks in line with construction drawings and specifications
• Undertake induction training, delivering toolbox talks and briefing all safety alerts, lessons learned, monthly safety focus and other relevant documents
• Liaison with statutory undertakers, stakeholders and clients as required
• Identifying training needs for personnel under their supervision
• Timely ordering and arranging delivery of all plant and equipment appropriate for safe delivery of the works ensuring it is maintained and secured always
• Complete and maintain daily records as per project specific requirements
• Authorisation of internal / external resource timesheets in line with agreed and actual hours worked
• Any other duties commensurate with the grade and level of responsibility of this post, for which the post holder has the necessary experience and/or training to fulfil.
• Ensure you follow the requirements of the company handbook
• Proactively engaging the Close Call reporting system, reporting anything that you see which is likely to endanger either your own safety or others’ health and safety
• Support where required accident, incident investigations
• Taking care of your own health and safety, and others who might be affected by your actions
• Critical duties, these will be listed via a further formal appointment in addition to this Job description.

Required experience, knowledge, qualifications, and training

• >5 years experience in drilling operations such as soil nailing, rock bolting, piling, anchoring etc., with at least 2 years experience in a supervisory role
• NVQ Land Drilling, NVQ Level 3 – Construction Site Supervision or equivalent
• SSSTS or IOSH Safe Supervision of Geotechnical Sites
• CSCS
• First Aid at work qualification.

Desirable experience, qualifications, and training

• IRATA Level 1 or above
• Temporary Works Supervisor (TWS)
• Lift Supervisor / Slinger Signaller
• Site Environmental Awareness Training Scheme (SEATS)
• SMSTS
• CPCS (Plant Operator tickets) or equivalent
